“There was given to me a thorn in the flesh… three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”
-2 Cor. 12:7-9
We too often look to see beauty only in and through our circumstances, when God desires most to use the “ashes” in our lives to develop the beauty in us. When we love as Jesus loved, we will be changed, even and especially when we are not loved in return. 1 Peter 4:12-13 states, “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.” Squeezing of the honeycomb brings the honey sweet, and pressing the flower brings out its perfume beautiful. God will bring all things to completion in His place and in His time.
I encourage all who have ashes remaining to ask three questions:
• Am I willing to turn over my ashes to God instead of clinging to the ruins out of fear of disappointment or my prideful desire to stay in control?
• Am I expecting the transformation to be according to my time frame, or am I willing to wait for God’s timing?
• Am I looking for the transformation in the wrong places instead of trusting in God’s faithfulness to “work all things for the good”?
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” - Romans 8:7-18
